For more detail havea look at me sketchbook, as I felt more comfortable with a book in the end ;) The blog was fun, but I like pictures to make my work look awesome.

Evaluation of how the mock exam went

In my mock exam I created a short animation piece based upon the rhythm and cycle of language. The piece is an interactive flash movie of an old television. The television has three “stickers” on it, which are all interactive and act as channel changing buttons. The first of the buttons is a sticker symbolising language in the past; when clicked it takes us to a short silent movie of a naked arm, writing symbols. The second button, representing the present, takes us to a channel of a naked person talking wrapped in chains. The third button is currently blank, as I did not have time to finish in time. The naked bodies wrapped in chains make reference to Bill Brandt and his use of the human body as a natural form. Throughout the film, the lighting is limited as it fades from dim light to near darkness.
I found that the use of the old television really aided in making the end user think about how “this is the past, what happens next?”. Also the use of limited lighting made you really focus on the television as it was the only thing giving out light. To give the television and old broken and static effect I used Sony Vegas Pro, which allows videos to be modified and rendered with a variety of effects. I chose to give my piece an old static and broken effect, as it serves almost as a warning; when we usually see broken televisions or broadcasts which are braking up, they usually are either calling a distress signal or giving out a warning. I chose this as I would like my piece to symbolise giving a warning to hoe our language may end up.
Something which I thought could have possibly changed was the use of the stickers as I did not think worked well with the whole feel of the piece, and maybe could have been transformed into actual real buttons with a brown texture, however this would take attention away from what they symbolise.
In my final exam I would have to think about what I think about what I wanted in my “future” channel if anything, as well as how I would like it to be displayed. I would also contemplate changing the stickers to something a little more subtle, as they are currently the only thing on the television and in the piece which looks relatively new, as they are quite colourful as opposed to the dull browns of the TV.

Basics

If you watched my video previous to this post, you understand what this image is about:
YOUTUBE VIDEOS are banned at school, so let me explain this image:

A short video explaining where I'm heading

Here is me, just explaining my current ideas on how and where they may develop into:

Advancement

I'd really like to look into the advancement of language, and how it has evolved from simple pictogram and runes, to a sophisticated language, and maybe our current language will get shorter with digital technology. I will upload an image or video to try and explain this idea!

Pictograms

Looking at pictograms, I plan to do a piece which is an animation but the buttons are pictograms which are signs of our stages of language, each an advancement. Once you click on one of the buttons it will show you a short clip of what it represents.

I Like Pictograms

I think Pictograms are almost like a universal language, pictures that can be understood in all languages. For this reason, I'm going to use them in my Final Piece.

"Pictographs can often transcend languages in that they can communicate to speakers of a number of tongues and language families equally effectively, even if the languages and cultures are completely different. This is why road signs and similar pictographic material are often applied as global standards expected to be understood by nearly all."

Alphabet

Typography

Typography is the These videos have inspired me to do some work involving letters and words. They use AfterEffects which I think gives a really good effect.

Discussion With My Peers

My peers and I have discussed my Idea, and it has led me to continue to develop my "Initial Idea #1". It has led me to look into typography and the origin of language and how we learn to speak as well as how we speak. I will also be looking into music, poems and singing to see if something is there that I could relate to. Someone also mentioned about bird language, and how our modern society is changing their mating calls, to match those of ring tones! I shall also look into generational gaps and colloquial language, where different regions and cultures have slang terms others would not understand. Also I shall be looking into slang terms and phases as well as accents. I shall possibly look into languages that are possibly dying, such as Gaelic and welsh. Another interesting point someone suggested looking into was Freudian slips, saying what's on your mind, without realising. I shall also try looking into core languages, such as latin, and how it has based other languages.

Digital Pioneers

The “Digital Pioneers” at the Victoria & Albert Museum offers a historical background for present-day digital arts. The exhibit provides an overview of the first decades of the computer's history in art and design. It includes some of the first computer-generated works in the V&A's collections, many of which have never been displayed in the UK before. From the 1960s until the early 1980s, some artists worked directly with computer hardware and software to produce graphic images nothing like anything that had gone before. It offers inspiration in showing we can continue to experiment and evolve our ideas of basic works and set a new era for art.

London V&A Exhibition: Decode

Decode was an exhibition held in the London Victoria & Albert Art Museum, which involved artistic works of an interactive nature. Some of the works such as the 'video wall' included a video camera which took one second shots of people at the exhibition and displayed them collectivly on a 'video wall' of 5x5 videos. Other inspirational pieces include the 'weave wall' (shown above), which has a tiny video camera inside which mimics in shadows the people facing it.This exhibition in it's enirtiety has inspired me to the possiblilties of a minimalistic digital video installment with interactive features.

Inital Idea #2 - 'Routines and Habits'

This idea comes from the basic routines that we all go through, everyday. This can include waking up, brushing our teeth and eating cereal, Drive to work/school, do work, eat lunch come home, drink a cup of tea, watch tv, brush teeth, go to bed. This idea will be animated possibly in stop motion or rotoscoping, most likely video. It will flick between the different scenes showing us about 2-5 seconds of each piece. Going through our daily routines. I might even have the animation 24 or 48 seconds long. Haveing either one or two seconds per hour in the day, giving a really rushed feeling.

Stop Motion

Here is my experimental stop motion video. I wanted to do this because i wanted to see the effect stop motion gave when you have it finished and was wondering wether or not it looks good. I think using stop motion for something as fluid as dance, does not look good, however for something which is not such a fluid movement, such as texting on a mobile phone, i think it would look awesome.

Initial Idea #1 - Language, Vowels and Letters!

This idea sprouted from my interest in language, and a rhythm I would like to explore is the the rhythm of vowels and how each and every word conventionally includes a vowel, EXCEPT RHYTHM! To explore this idea I'm thinking of doing a poem or paragraph of words, with the final word being rhythm, and every vowel is highlighted throughout the piece.

A few ideas to explore - 'Rhythms and Cycles' brainstormed
